From family medicine to the final frontier

"It's a field where you can solve puzzles and get creative with solutions," he says. "The brain is the final frontier of medicine!"

This curiosity led him to pursue a fellowship in Sports Neurology and Pain Medicine at the prestigious Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles. Today, he brings that expertise to Neura Health, where he helps patients with a wide range of neurological concerns.

Dr. Patel is a fierce advocate for concussion awareness and education. He believes in early intervention and a proactive approach to recovery. "The brain is incredibly resilient," he emphasizes. "With the right support and treatment, we can help you get back to doing the things you love."

He's also passionate about helping people manage migraines and optimize their overall brain health through lifestyle changes, medications, and innovative technologies like neuromodulation. He's learned from his patients that "lifestyle changes can make an incredible difference in neurological health," and he's committed to providing empathetic and supportive care.

Dr. Patel is genuinely invested in his patients' well-being. He finds immense satisfaction in seeing his patients become empowered to take control of their health. "I'm most proud of the grateful and curious patients who are eager to learn," he shares, "and those who were able to then educate their community about neurological health."

Video Transcript:

Hi, I'm Neil Patel. I'm a neurologist here at Neura Health. I focus on sports neurology and migraine, treating patients with concussions from average Joes to collegiate and professional athletes. I kind of work with everyone.

What First Brought you to Medicine?

I grew up in a family full of doctors, so I've been in medicine my whole life, seeing it from different avenues.

When I went through med school, I noticed that neurology kind of drew to me. I love solving puzzles and the brain is the final frontier of medicine. And so that really drew to me. Around that time, that's when concussions started getting a little bit bigger, and I thought it was a great way to combine my passions with sports and neurology.

And in neurology residency, I learned more about it, and that's why I did a fellowship in sports neurology, so I can get more experience working with athletes and their brain injuries.

What is Sports Neurology?

Sports neurology encompasses a lot of different areas of neurology, concussion being the biggest one, but also how healthy people can become better.

So, allowing average people to, if you're healthy, we can try and make you a little bit better, faster and stronger. Any neurological condition in athletes, we can try and help out with as well. Figuring out what's going wrong is probably half of it, but the other half is getting to know the patient, figuring out how we can make their lives a little bit better.

Whether it's with lifestyle changes, medications, or even newer technologies like neuromodulation.

Why is it important to have an initial consultation before starting treatment?

I think it's really important because there's so many different treatments out there. For unless we get to, to know you and know what you're doing. What you want what your goals are. We're not going to have a good idea of what we need to do.

The more we get to know you, the better we know how we can help you in different aspects.

What advocacy groups do you feel passionately about?

No, I'm pretty passionate about concussion and brain injury. So there's a lot of different groups that kind of help as an advocate for brain injury and. They're loved ones. And also specifically concussion as well, gone from youth athletes all the way up to retired athletes.

Why should patients connect with advocacy organizations?

It's important because most patients don't know all the resources that they have available to them. So these groups can be very helpful in giving different ideas and different references to resources that patients can have in their community.

What advice would you give to patients who experienced a concussion, never received treatment, and are still experiencing symptoms?

I guess it depends on what's going on. Certain concussions and a small percentage of people can take a long time to heal, but we know that the brain is pretty resilient, and we can focus therapies at any point in time trying to get you back to normal.

What key concussion facts do you wish patients knew?

Yeah, I think early recognition of brain injury is pretty important. Nowadays, we kind of focus on early rest and for a day or two and then actually gradually getting back into your routine with exercise and cognitive exercises as well to kind of help ramp you back into normal life.

How did your family's medical tradition begin?

I, I don't know. It's, I mean, it started in my parents generation and then went to me and my sister, all my aunts and uncles and cousins all went into different specialties in medicine.

And so neurology wasn't taken. So luckily that's what I fell into.

What should patients know about your specialty and care approach?

One aspect of, again, sports neurology is performance medicine.

So, even if you feel like you're healthy, there might be certain aspects of your life that we can try and optimize and, and get you feeling even better.
