How to navigate a Neura Health as an international patient

Navigating healthcare as an international patient can be overwhelming, especially when seeking specialized care for migraines or neurological issues. If you’re outside the United States, Neura Health offers several services that can help guide your care journey, even if direct prescriptions or tests aren’t available.

Here’s how you can make the most of your Neura Health appointment and how it can complement your local healthcare.

What we can do for international patients

Neura specialists can offer informational consultations for international patients, which are educational visits to evaluate your current treatment plan and make recommendations for improvement.

While Neura Health can’t prescribe medications or order tests for patients outside the U.S., we can still provide valuable insights into your condition and offer expert advice on optimizing your treatment plan.

What you get as a membership benefit

International patients can benefit from Neura Health in the following ways:

  • Educational consultations: You can discuss your current treatment with a Neura Health neurologist and receive recommendations for medications, lifestyle changes, and other therapies that could improve your care. These recommendations can be shared with your local healthcare provider for further action.

  • Symptom tracking: Neura Health’s digital headache tracker is currently available in the U.S. and Canada. Your Neura care team will be able to access this information and analyze for patterns and treatment efficiency.
  • Care coaching: Even if you're located outside the U.S. and Canada, Neura Health offers valuable care coaching through their website. By meeting with a board-certified healthcare coach twice a month, you can:
    • Develop coping strategies: Learn effective techniques to manage your neurological symptoms while you await an appointment with a local specialist.
    • Create a personalized action plan: Get guidance on handling challenging situations and symptom flare-ups.
    • Gain support and encouragement: Receive personalized support and motivation as you navigate your neurological health journey.
  • Collaborative care: Neura Health can communicate directly with your local neurologist or primary care physician (PCP). By sharing visit notes and making recommendations, Neura Health can help ensure you receive the best possible care, even across borders.

Why Neura Health is a good choice for international patients

Access to specialized care for migraines and other neurological issues can be limited or involve long wait times in many countries. Here’s why Neura Health is an excellent option for international patients:

  • Shorter wait times: In many countries, patients face long waits (up to 1-2 years) to see a neurologist. Neura Health allows you to book an appointment and speak with a specialist much faster, getting an expert opinion while waiting for local care.
  • Lack of awareness about treatment options: Not all local doctors may be familiar with the latest migraine treatments, such as CGRP inhibitors or certain preventative medications. Neura Health neurologists are up-to-date on the most effective therapies and can guide you on what treatments might work best.
  • Help advocating for the right care: It can be challenging to advocate for specific treatments with a local doctor who may not specialize in migraines. Neura Health can help by offering clear, research-backed recommendations that you can bring to your appointments, ensuring you get the most suitable care.
  • No referrals needed: In many healthcare systems, seeing a specialist requires a referral from a general practitioner. With Neura Health, you can access specialized advice directly, bypassing this common obstacle.

How to sign up as an international patient

While Neura Health is focused on U.S. patients, international patients can still access many of its services by following a few steps:

  • Get started here: Go to app.neurahealth.co/onboarding
  • Select Alaska (AK) as state: Use zip code 99663 to indicate you are an international patient. This will flag your account, and Neura Health will follow up to confirm your location and provide further guidance.
  • App access: The Neura Health app, including its headache tracker, is only available in the U.S. and Canada (+1 country code). However, you can access all other membership benefits, such as care coaching, via the Neura Health website.
  • Pricing: All services are billed in USD, so be mindful of exchange rates when budgeting for your consultations.

Working with your local neurologist or primary care physician

After your consultation with a Neura Health neurologist, you’ll receive detailed notes and recommendations tailored to your condition.

You can share this information with your local doctor or specialist to implement changes in your care plan.

Additionally, Neura Health can reach out to your healthcare providers directly, facilitating collaboration across borders and ensuring you receive the most effective care possible.

A note from the author

I am a Canadian who was on a 15-month wait list to see a neurologist for migraine treatment. I already had a treatment plan which I had to pause during pregnancy, and I wanted to resume  since my attack frequency increased. I was not aware of any medication options other than the first line of treatment, and was in incredible pain.

It severely impacted my mental health, career, family, and every other aspect of my life.

It was at this time I stumbled upon Neura Health. My first video visit was validating. The approach was to first acknowledge the severity of my symptoms, and then educate me on the disease as well as available treatment options. My Neura headache specialist was able to give me a plan to share with my doctor.

My care coach helped me find ways to manage anxiety and stress around migraine attacks. These weren't strategies like breathing or meditation. They understood that I needed a different approach and gave me sustainable, practical ways to cope with my attacks, as well as advice around how to advocate myself when I did get to meet my local neurologist.

Neura Health helps bridge the gap between local care limitations and the most up-to-date treatment options. International patients can benefit from personalized care recommendations and the ability to collaborate with Neura Health’s specialists while continuing their care locally.
