How chronic illness can impact your teeth

This content has been medically reviewed by Dr. Thomas Berk.

We often think of our dental health as separate from our overall health, but the truth is, they're closely intertwined. Chronic illnesses, in particular, can have a surprising impact on your teeth and gums. This post explores this connection and offers practical tips for protecting your smile, even with the challenges of a chronic condition.

Chronic illnesses can affect your mouth in ways you might not expect. Here's how:

Stomach acid and enamel erosion

Conditions like GERD or frequent vomiting (sometimes associated with migraine or other conditions) expose your teeth to harsh stomach acid. This acid can erode enamel, making your teeth weaker and more vulnerable to cavities and sensitivity.

What to do:

  • Rinse your mouth with water or a baking soda solution after episodes of acid reflux or vomiting to neutralize the acid.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes after vomiting before brushing your teeth to avoid further enamel erosion.
  • Use enamel-strengthening toothpaste and mouthwash.

Inflammation and gum disease

Chronic inflammation, common in autoimmune diseases and other conditions, can affect your gums, leading to swelling, bleeding, and infections. This can create a vicious cycle where gum disease further fuels inflammation in the body.

What to do:

  • Get a yearly deep cleaning to remove buildup below the gumline.
  • Follow an anti-inflammatory diet.
  • Use a water flosser to clean effectively between teeth and along the gumline.

Jaw clenching and teeth grinding

Conditions like migraine, TMJ, and anxiety can lead to jaw clenching or teeth grinding, which wears down teeth and can even cause them to crack or chip.

What to do:

  • Use a custom-fitted mouthguard to protect your teeth while you sleep.
  • Practice progressive muscle relaxation before bed to reduce jaw tension.

Medications and dry mouth

Many medications used to treat chronic illnesses can cause dry mouth. Since saliva protects your teeth, reduced saliva production increases your risk of cavities and gum disease.

What to do:

  • Chew sugar-free gum or suck on sugar-free lozenges to stimulate saliva production.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Use a saliva substitute if needed.

Fatigue and oral hygiene

Fatigue, pain, or difficulty with fine motor skills can make it harder to maintain good oral hygiene habits, increasing the risk of plaque buildup, cavities, and gum disease.

What to do:

  • Use an electric toothbrush to make brushing easier.
  • Consider a water flosser if traditional flossing is difficult.
  • Ask for assistance with oral hygiene if needed.

Prepping for your dental visit

Dental visits can be stressful, but communication is key!

Before your appointment:

Call ahead and let them know about your condition and any challenges. Explain if you need accommodations like frequent breaks or a quieter environment. Mention any medications that might affect your dental care, and ask if they have experience treating patients with chronic illnesses.

During your appointment:

Bring comfort items like sunglasses or a fidget toy. Briefly remind them of your needs. Speak up if you need a break or adjustment.

Many dentists are understanding and accommodating. Look for practices that prioritize patient comfort and have experience with chronic illnesses.
